Lane: Sometimes you got to be your biggest fan, your biggest critic. You don't have to fit the profile or check all the boxes on the surface. Just trusting that you can get to where you want to be if you continue to do the work.
The process of being grounded, but even beyond that, the process of grounding, I think, takes a village. If you don't have access or the ability to ground yourself, you can rely on your social support to keep you grounded. We need to cultivate a conducive and supportive space, especially as men, in 2021.
Man. I think the idea or the word that really comes to mind for me is co-creation. You inspired us to take a new direction in our podcast. Maybe one of your listeners then starts a podcast. It's all this complex and fascinating and inspiring web of co-creation that really just makes me optimistic and inspired for the future.
When it comes to wanting to grow, grow, I think you have to take the attention off of what's going on around you and place it to self. You have to do a lot of work on yourself to know that you got to love yourself more. When you love yourself, you won't be threatened by seeing other people succeed.
You move the fastest forward if you're by yourself, but you go a lot farther with someone else. If you can have dinner with anybody, who would it be? It would be Nipsey Hussle forever.
"The community where I come from in South Philadelphia, there's a lot of intergenerational trauma, poverty, losses, and just disenfranchisement. Sometimes that hardens your heart but I don't think anyone wants to intentionally harm or hurt others. I think a lot of times we are slaves to our inner thoughts, and we need to redirect energy towards ourselves." - Montay Fowler, MSW
This week’s guest is Montay Fowler.
Montay was born & raised in Philadelphia and is a graduate of Temple University and UPenn’s Masters of Social Work program.
The last time we interviewed in Montay in June 2020, we discussed his personal journey into social work and the systematic & personal implications related to the Black Lives Matter Movement.
Since then, he has moved to Atlanta to pursue a director of student engagement position, and was recently featured in Voyage ATL as a Rising Star of the Atlanta community.
He also hosts the Failing Forward podcast, where he hopes “to inspire other entrepreneurs & creatives to fall in love with the process, embrace challenges along the way, and find grace on their journey to success.”
