This week’s guest is Rachel Lucero. She is the host and creator of The Sago Show—a Filipino food show that seeks to examine the intricate intersectionality of culture, history, and education through creative & authentic Filipino food recipes.
Last year, I was invited to speak to the association of Filipino Scientists in America. The day before I was set to give my talk was the Atlanta Spots shooting. On that day, I really felt one with others in the Asian American community.
Rachel says she wanted to create a space for students to find their own voices. She says the true catalyst for her success was public speeches she gave last year. She believes that empowering students can be replicated in the classroom.
Being a teacher transformed my perception of myself in terms of my voice having impact on others. She says putting her thoughts out there more has given her a lot of confidence and felt power in her own voice. The important thing is actually saying what you think and having courage to do that.
Aiden: A lot of the narrative among Asian Americans is that we are silent. He says if you stay true to your intention and your beliefs, then others will see that and they will follow naturally. The power of empowerment still speaks through where you have to do it for yourself.
The Sago Show explores what it means to be Filipino American in the United States. Rachel says her experiences as a teacher and grappling with race and identity led up to starting the show. She hopes the series will keep her accountable.
Doreen Fernandez created a framework to understand the evolution of Filipino food. Even though the Philippines was colonized, you see so much indigenous tradition that persists. That's what makes Filipino food so complex.
Welcome back to another episode of Discover More.
This week’s guest is Rachel Lucero. She is the host and creator of The Sago Show—a Filipino food show that seeks to examine the intricate intersectionality of culture, history, and education through creative & authentic Filipino food recipes.
Rachel is a Filipino-American and, as a former Teach For America corps member, she shares a strong passion and commitment for education and social justice, especially for those who are marginalized and underserved.
With her bachelor's in bioengineering and M.S. in education from John Hopkins University, Rachel found her unique calling on Youtube by combining her interest in cultural competency, technology, and pop culture—all through creating snack-size videos and reels on Instagram. The perfect cross-section between entertainment and education.
You can find her latest featured interview article: “Filipino Food Has a New Spokesperson” in Eater Magazine.
Rachel’s increased exposure through her brand also allowed her to give numerous public speeches this past year at USC and to the Association of Filipino Scientists in America, which helped her realize the power of her voice.
Through this realization, Rachel became more mindful and intentional with her brand and the ways she could also help elevate the voices of those who need elevated.
We believe Rachel beautifully embodies the Discover More ethos of the curious mindset, and we are beyond excited to have this conversation with her.
