This week, we continue our conversation with Rachel Lucero. She is the creator and the host of The Sago Show, a Filipino food show that explores history, culture, and identity through Filipino food recipes. We learn about the concept of indigenization and the importance of taking action.
Aidan: I had to push myself to not be absolutely perfect. It's hard, yeah, the audio fatigue. But again, content that's published is a thousand times better than content that is just in my Notes app. I think it's this creative process, this dance we're always doing right between creating versus consumption.
Rachel Lucero talks about the unexpected benefits of having a Sago show. How has finding your Filipino identity through cooking informed the way that you plan to share that with family going forward? How does that inform your thoughts around tying those two ideas together?
In my K-12 education, there was so much pressure to assimilate, especially when you're in a class where everyone else is white. I lost out on this time that I could have been learning about my own identity and my culture. There is a trade off that I very much feel like I'm having to make up for now.
Sagos: I hope that my videos spark interest for them to learn more about Filipino history. All of this history, all of these things that we learn about are still having effects right now. Sagos: We have to move to the next phase, which is how do we make things better for our communities.
On the other side talking about your fascinating and frankly, unexpected journey that you embarked on for the past year.
“I do think like it's so important for us to do this identity work because we have to move to the next phase, which is how do we make things better for our own communities? And how do we make things better for our homelands as well? So in my videos, I try to push the viewer on that. And to, you know, be keeping current with a situation in the Philippines and to not just think about the identity journey ending with our self, but making a better a better place for our future generations, for our country too.” - Rachel Lucero
This week, we continue our conversation with Rachel Lucero.
She is the creator & host of The Sago Show—a Filipino food show that explores history, culture, and identity through Filipino food recipes.
Last week, we dropped episode #92, part 1 of the interview, where Rachel shared about her personal upbringing and the genesis of the Sago Show.
This week, we dive into some of the specifics of Filipino cuisine and some of Rachel’s lessons learned from her food journey. She shares the concept of indigenization, a beautiful framework to understand the evolution of cultural cuisine and adoption.
We also discuss the complexities of fusion cuisine, the importance of taking action, and the process of overcoming perfectionist tendencies.
We learned so much in this episode and hope you enjoy this conversation with Rachel Lucero.
